Intelligent traffic systems to save 205 million tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2027

Intelligent traffic management technology can be used effectively to solve traffic problems, improve transportation efficiency and reduce greenhouse gases.

A new study from Juniper Research has predicted that global CO2 emissions savings from intelligent traffic management systems will be 205 MMT (million metric tons) by 2027, a growth of 41%, compared to just 145 .7 MMT in 2022. Analysts have claimed that this figure is equivalent to almost twice the CO2 emissions from domestic transport in the UK in 2019.

Reducing congestion through optimized traffic control will be the main influencing factor. Intelligent Traffic Management uses digital technologies to manage traffic based on real-time data to reduce congestion and minimize emissions.

Research has identified the environmental benefits of intelligent traffic management systems as very compelling, including significant reductions in congestion and emissions associated with traffic, and the prioritization of greener modes of transport. The report also identified smart interactions as reductions in driving, with hours spent in traffic set to decrease by an average of 36 hours per year per motorist globally by 2027.

The report forecasts investment in smart intersections to reach $10.2 billion by 2027, up from $5.7 billion in 2022. It predicts smart intersection providers will focus on improving connectivity between road vehicles and the local road network ecosystem, reflecting government initiatives on smart cities. Juniper Research recommended that technology vendors take advantage of 5G’s low latency capabilities, combined with machine learning algorithms, to enable real-time network adjustments and improve traffic flow. .

Moreover, research – Intelligent Traffic Management: Use Cases, Regional Analysis and Marketing Forecast 2022-2027 – argues that cybersecurity must be considered when implementing intelligent traffic systems to maximize public support, alleviating concerns about data collection and storage. The authors say intelligent management systems must be prioritized for the implementation of cybersecurity, in order to protect user data, which is transmitted at every stage of the process. Given the potential for cyberattacks to disrupt infrastructure through denial of service, robust cybersecurity strategies are essential to prevent threats to road infrastructure integrity.
