Global Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT) Market to Reach 1.5 Million Metric Tons by 2026
Polybutylene terephthalate or PBT is a semi-crystalline, synthetic, semi-aromatic engineering thermoplastic representing the second largest commercial polyester. Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) is a saturated polyester derived from terephthalic acid, butanediol (BDO) and dimethyl terephthalate (DMT). A semi-crystalline white or off-white thermoplastic polyester, PBT has similar properties and composition to polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The material belongs to the category of polyester resins. Amid COVID-19 crisis, the global polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) market estimated at 1.3 million metric tons in 2022 is expected to reach a revised size of 1.5 million metric tons by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 4.7% over the analysis period. Automotive, one of the segments analyzed in the report, is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.1% to reach 648.1 thousand metric tons by the end of the analysis period. After a thorough analysis of the business implications of the pandemic and its induced economic crisis, the Electronics & Electrical segment growth is readjusted to a revised CAGR of 4.2% for the next 7-year period. This segment currently accounts for a 35.5% share of the global polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) market. The automotive industry represents the largest end-use market for PBTs. PBT is widely used in automotive electrical components as well as automotive exterior and interior parts such as fuel system components, fuse boxes, handles, ignition system components, ignition boxes mirrors, wipers and vents. The strong preference for PBT-based products in the automotive industry is due to properties such as stiffness, strength, dimensional stability, weather and heat resistance, and resistance to lubricants and fuels . The prevailing economic climate in the automotive industry therefore tends to impact the market outlook for PBTs.

The US market is estimated at 140.3 thousand metric tons in 2022, while China is expected to reach 561.9 thousand metric tons by 2026
The polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) market in the United States is estimated at 140.3 thousand metric tons in 2022. The country currently accounts for an 11.24% share of the global market. China, the world’s second largest economy, is expected to reach an estimated market size of 561.9 thousand metric tons in 2026 growing at a CAGR of 6.3% over the analysis period. Other notable geographic markets include Japan and Canada, each predicting growth of 2.8% and 3.2% respectively over the analysis period. In Europe, Germany is expected to grow at a CAGR of approximately 3.2% while the rest of the European market (as defined in the study) will reach 599.5 thousand metric tons by the end of the analysis period.

PBT manufacturers will continue to focus on developing recyclable PBTs without compromising chemical and mechanical properties. Future growth of the PBT market will be defined by the development of innovative material grades by manufacturers to meet the ever-changing requirements of different application markets. PBT is expected to maintain its relevance and popularity in a wide range of industrial applications. The polymer will benefit from lucrative growth opportunities in the automotive industry due to the growing interest of automakers in lightweight, high strength, cost effective and low maintenance materials. As traditional PBT materials continue to grow in less demanding applications, the introduction of newer PBT grades with better performance attributes such as improved electrical performance, hydrolysis resistance, chemical resistance and melt stability exceptional redefines future growth models. For example, PBT materials can be treated with flame retardants to render the polymer incombustible. Such materials work in combination with several thermoplastic polyesters to cover or frame electrical appliances. PBT molding compounds are also used for laser welding, which finds use in applications such as automotive casings as it allows the welding of disparate materials of varying dimensions. The advantages offered by laser technology help reduce production costs, thereby reducing product costs and allowing manufacturers to compete on price.

Rising adoption of engineering plastics in various end applications is one of the major factors that will drive the growth of the PBT market. Engineering plastics are considered chemical resistant and also exhibit superior heat resistance properties, making them suitable for use in fluid handling systems, fuel systems as well as high temperature applications. The engineering plastics market is also influenced by the level and rate of replacement of traditional materials. In developed economies, there has been a significant conversion from metal to engineering plastics in almost every major industry. On the other hand, in developing countries, there is a flagrant underuse of engineering plastics, with a per capita consumption level of less than half a kg in some countries of the Asia Pacific. With the improvement in the manufacturing sector, the demand for PBT thermoplastic materials will also witness a parallel improvement in the coming years. The automotive industry of Asia Pacific will continue to use PBT in several high-end models. Continued
