NEW YORK – Netflix launched a new website on Tuesday that measures its most-watched movies and series by the number of hours users spend watching them. The results? People are watching “Squid Game” and the new action-adventure movie “Red Notice” maybe even more than you might have guessed.
According to the streaming service’s new metric, Rawson Marshall Thurber’s “Red Notice”, starring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds, has been watched 148.7 million hours worldwide since it debuted Nov. 12 on Netflix. . Last week’s most popular series was “Narcos: Mexico” Season 3, with 50.3 million hours viewed.
The first season of “Squid Game” is Netflix’s most watched show or movie, with 1.6 billion hours viewed.
Every Tuesday, Netflix will update the “Top10 on Netflix” site with the top 10 series and movies on the streaming service. So far, Netflix has been selective in sharing audience data. He sometimes shared views for hits and he logs a top 10 list, with no data, on the service itself.
Although the Hours Watched metric replaces previous Netflix “views”, which might be as short as a few minutes of a movie or series. Other big streaming services, like Amazon Prime Video and Disney +, don’t regularly publish audience data.
Netflix’s metrics still don’t say how many people actually watched something on the service, and it doesn’t include movies or series that aren’t in its Top 10. But it’s the most transparent metric. to date adopted by Netflix.
“This is an important step forward for Netflix, the creators we work with and our members,” Pablo Perez De Rosso, vice president of content strategy at Netflix, wrote on Tuesday. “People want to understand what success means in a streaming world, and these lists offer the clearest answer to that question in our industry.”
Netflix will be releasing both English and non-English ratings, as well as Top 10 lists for over 90 countries. The company said it hired accounting firm EY to audit its figures.
At its current rate, “Red Notice” – which has received largely negative reviews from critics – could become Netflix’s most popular film. This title is currently owned by Sandra Bullock’s 2018 thriller “Bird Box”, with 282 million hours of viewing time.
