The win… despite the club losing their best D-man over the next 2-3 weeks.

I have learned that it is not possible to convince all the critics of the quality of Darnell Nurse. But while the 6-man unit Dave Tippet iced last night has taken over well, replacing all of the quality ice that Nurse covers in a game will be a long-term challenge.

This and more in this edition of …

9 things

9. Darnell Nurse came out 2-3 weeks with a broken finger. I could see it was less. It is not a lower body injury, so Nurse will always be in great shape. Slater Koekkoek is out for 3-4 weeks. He has a sprained ankle. But it’s not a high ankle strain that is often much more of a problem. They will both be missed, but the news could have been worse in each case. More information on the nurse in a minute.

8. We could look at 2 top 2 Oilers in the next decade. Ethan Bear and Caleb jones had their supporters in Edmonton and for good reason. But with all due respect, the ceiling of Philippe Broberg (who earned his assist on Saturday and was very solid) and Evan bouchard (who added 2 more assists) is higher than for “the team” at Jones & Bear.

7. I wonder if Ryan nugent hopkins gets some Olympic consideration. A dark horse candidate, for sure. But ‘The Nuge’ is an essential part of one of the 3 e best PK unit in the NHL. And he’s long been an elite Power Play performer and would be a familiar partner for Connor mcdavid . Those special team skills might get him into the conversation. All teams need role players, even Olympic ones.

6. Canada, by January 15 e , 2022, require all essential workers (including professional athletes) to be fully immunized if they are to enter Canada. This will potentially impact any Oilers comeback Josh archibald . Archibald’s good health is of paramount importance. But if he can tick that box and play hockey again, that will become a factor to consider. I wish him good luck, but it’s far.

5. I don’t think the Oilers have to get out of the organization because it’s 3 e Line. Yes, this trio fell to 5v5 after a good start. But that’s still a small sample. And I also said when they acquired Derek ryan that it is ideally your 4C. With Ryan mcleod finding his game (he scored again on Saturday, his best outing yet), I think McLeod’s speed can make the difference alongside Zack Kassian and Derek foegele . They were the Oilers’ top line on Saturday. And all 3 are also great men.

4. I am waiting Dylan holloway be an antidote for the Oilers 4 e line before the end of the Olympic break. Finding another player as quick, knowledgeable and serious as Holloway is not impossible, but it would come at a cost. However, if you have an internal solution, then it preserves those assets for another critical need (a cross? A goalie? A D-man? Normally the player being both 1) green as grass and 2) injured as the Oilers prospect, it would be a disturbing combination. But Holloway’s legs and wind should be fine.

3. But even if Holloway is ready, he would start on the wing. And you can never have too many Centers. With Seattle expansion struggling, I would expect them to be involved in conversations with other clubs. mason Appleton would be a good asset for Edmonton: a 25-year-old, 6’2, 200-pound right-wing pivot, 54% of the face-offs for Winnipeg in 2021. Appleton is replaced by a player from Edmonton Rich winter . While they’re at it, could the Oilers add depth and PK size with the Seattle winger? Nathan Bastien ? Keep an eye out for both.

2. How rare a bird is Stuart skinner in the Edmonton nets? Most regular season NHL games played for the Oilers by an Oilers drafted goalie : Grant Fuhr (423), Andy Moog (235), Devan Dubnyk (171), Jussi Markkanen (102), Jeff Deslauriers (58), Joaquin gage (23), Mike Morrison (21), Darryl Reaugh (7) then Skinner (now 6). If you narrow this list down further, just Born in Edmonton , Oilers drafted matches played? If we count Spruce Grove, Fuhr still leads but followed by Skinner and Skinner alone. It’s a very short list. No wonder Stu is somewhat of an instant fan favorite. And this’ stache is on point too!

1. There is probably nothing I can write that can convince critics of Darnell Nurse that the Oilers’ rearguard is among the elite of the NHL. So, I will not try. But I want to try to dismiss a narrative that I think is patently false: that Time On Ice is not a meaningful, meaningful indicator that a D-man is a true elite-level defender. I’m always surprised how many eyes look past this statistic when it says so many valuable things about a player. And while yes, I do plan on explaining why this is a legitimate factor in nurse consideration, it should be when evaluating any NHL D-man.

Here are the top 10 NHL snackers through 2021-2022: Thomas chabot (27:11), Brett Burns (26:52), Zach Weresnski (26:31), Kris letang (26:17), Darnell Nurse (26:06), Seth jones (which we saw last night, 25:55), Victor hedman (25:44), Alex Pietrangelo (25:34), Aaron Ekblad (25:20) and Romain Josi (25:20). Can we agree that the 9 guys not named Nurse will either be finalists or locks in to be Olympians for their respective countries? This is the area code that Darnell Nurse uses regularly. That in itself should tell you something.

There are critical factors that play into these 10 men’s games. The first example is the simple fact that the longer one of them stays on the ice, the more likely it is to be exposed by an attacker. Some will rightly point out errors made on this player’s watch, but their errors by 60 are usually less… and this is far more important. If you don’t compare errors proportional to ice time, you are missing out on a full picture.

The more you play, the more likely you are to face elite attackers. And that’s often beyond what intentional matches provide. It’s practically impossible to shelter a player when he’s on the ice as much as the 10 guys we’re using as examples. Of course, you will make more mistakes when playing against better players. And these opponents are more able to take advantage of it.

In addition, the more YOU accumulate, the more you are physically taxed against these elites. There is just a little less in the tank each time you go out. And just like driving a car when you’re tired, the longer you exercise, the more likely you are to make mental mistakes on the ice. This is where talent and intelligence combine to limit them, which, again, is why some guys get those minutes and some don’t.

Here is the essential: the 20 e minute any NHL D-man plays is harder to play than the 19th, the 21st is harder than the 20th, and it usually gets exponentially so from there. And this is especially the case when playing against the best hockey players in the world. That’s why only the best can do it consistently.

The bottom line is that a player gets more from YOU because their coach trusts them to do the job. The less he trusts you, the less you will play.

So if you accept that NHL coaches love Dave tippet will do whatever it takes to win and understand that they will be sacked if they don’t …

… Then I think you’ll start to weight the time on the ice more appropriately. And that includes for Darnell Nurse.
