Metric loss

187.23 metric tonnes of paddy purchased in Punjab

Chandigarh, December 1 (SocialNews.XYZ) A total of 187.23 metric tonnes (MT) of paddy was purchased in Punjab during the Kharif season, Food and Civilian Supplies Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu said on Wednesday.

In addition, 97,000 MT were purchased by private traders.

The minister said Rs 36,257.30 crore has been transferred to the bank accounts of 820,174 beneficiaries.

He said the state had established 3,109 purchasing centers for the supply of paddy.

He said the Union government had postponed the purchase of paddy until October 11, which would have caused huge losses to farmers. With the intervention of Chief Minister Charanjit Channi, the Central government withdrew the decision and started purchasing from October 3. The shopping season ended on November 30.

The state had formed 150 flying squads to verify false invoices and unauthorized imports of paddy from other states. A total of 4,695.20 quintals of paddy were seized from 21 vehicles during the journey.

Ashu said that in order to tackle the shortage of jute bags, the state government specially organized West Bengal bags.
